Mr. Lomax has manage to vividly bring the issues of the Vietnam war to a graphic novel form that digs into what it is that we as a society really ask our military personal to do for the greater good. The series is based on notes from a draftee's 1966 tour and Mr. Lomax has mined those experiences and produced a very interesting read for those that enjoy the grahicp novel form. The stories are a mixture of experiences that will have the reader wondering what is fact and what is fiction. I am not sure that i'd recommend this novel for younger readers so each parent will have to make that decision for themselves.Product details

"Vietnam Journal, Book 1 Indian Country" published by Transfuzion is an action packed graphic novel of the Vietnam War. This hard hitting graphic novel was written and illustrated by Don Lomax. The "Black and White" format contributes to the rawness of the war stories. Lomax uses a journalist, Scott Neithammer known to the men serving in Nam as Journal, to tell the many different stories of fighting in Vietnam.
This concept works great. By using a reporter, who can switch units and be in different parts of the country, Lomax is able to tell different stories from a variety of Army Military Occupation Specialties (MOS) and battles. From straight legs (ground pounders, aka the Infantry), Canine Troops, Huey pilots and door gunners, and CIA involvement we get different points of view on the fighting.
This first volume of "Vietnam Journal" starts at a time of the beginning of the heaviest buildup of troops in Nam, February 1967 (build up of troops began in 1965 and continued through 1968). Lomax places between stories facts about military hardware, such as the Huey which provided immense mobility for moving troops. Also, between stories are one page articles of MIA's in Nam.
Book 1 (Volume1) contains four stories, The Field Jacket, The Dogs of War, Scorched Earth, and Birds of Prey.
One of the reasons I purchased "Vietnam Journal" is that I am a Vietnam Combat Veteran and was interested on how the subject would be presented. No one will ever know the true horrors of war by reading a graphic novel or any novel of war. However, I think Don Lomax has done a terrific job in presenting the Vietnam War in this medium. I recommend this graphic novel for those who would like to know a little of that forgotten war and at the same time enjoy a terrific read with great graphics. I give it 5 Stars and look forward to reading Book 2 "Vietnam Journal The Iron Triangle."

I bought this 1st volume out of curiosity, and instantly came back to for volumes 2-8!

Just a fyi review - if someone is going to consider purchasing this Series on , if they do, they need to be aware of an issue which has been encountered, which is NOT the fault of or .
I was looking for this series for a long time, since my original copies are in storage and unavailable to read.
I looked around for quite some time and always found this series for the sum of nearly $140.00 for the complete 8 Volumes (in its original formats) - which was in my mind - just too much to pay for Graphic novel.
So, I came to to see if it was available on , I found that it was for a total of $40.00, a much better and reasonable price for the complete 8 Volume Series.
Once purchased and downloaded, I opened the first Volume (Indian Country) and the first thing I noticed was that the series text was too small to be read, the layout was centred, and there is no zoom function (as its greyed out)...this occurred on ALL platforms... as I have the PC reader, the App for Android, and the Cloud Reader.
So, I checked all the subsequent Volumes, to see if it was just the first volume, but it was not, it occurred with all 8 volumes.
I am not going to raze the author of the series Don Lomax (Vietnam Journal), as its a GREAT Graphic Novel Series and SHOULD BE read, as I recommend it.
However, its the formate that (either) the author or publisher decided to use, that rendered it (as unreadable), on 's formate. -
So after several attempts to correct this issue on my own, I thought it (best) to contacted AMAZON Support and they immediately assisted me greatly with this issue.
After going through some procedures of re-installing the s Apps, retracing the steps of downloading, it came down to the final probable cause for the problem...
It was explained to me that (some kindle books) - do not have the zoom option available - and its unfortunate that this is the case for this series (Vietnam Journal) and that it doesn't have this option in-place.
Because without it (active) your very unlikely to read the Series comfortably.
The end result was, which was - 'fully explained' - that it was the - publisher/authors decision - to not enable this option (zoom) for the kindle editions.
Whatever the reasons were for this unusual decision, in my opinion, ~ defeated the purpose of reading this series, especially since its a great Graphic Novel that NEEDS to read and enjoyed.
Support Staff did a great job in its support and I am awaiting a FULL complete refund for the purchases of ALL 8 volumes to be completed in a few days.
My recommendation is DO NOT purchase this series in its current format (until) the publisher decides to correct this issue for the kindle, and makes the zoom function available in order to read this classic presentation for comfortably and accessibly.
Hence my 4 star's...
After finishing the great "The 'Nam" comic book series by Marvel, I was excited to come across this series by Don Lomax. The stories are good so far, and the black and white art is okay (the detail in the art is nice, but every character has a cartoon style lumpy looking face, which can kinda of be off putting), but I'm really disappointed in the poor print quality. The text and art is blurry. The text is so low quality, you can clearly see the little dots that make up the text, like a dot matrix printer from the 90's. I expected more from this book for a cover price of $20. I was planning on getting the entire collection of these books, but I'm not sure if I'm going to buy anymore. I might by the next volume to see if the pint quality is any better, but I bet it's the same.
If you haven't read "The 'Nam" by Marvel, I'd highly recommend that series over this one. It's full color, the art is solid, and the print quality is what you'd expect for a professionally printed graphic novel..
